[FULLY BOOKED] SPECIAL TASTING EVENT
From the hands of the 15th generation Okutomi family, based in Sayama.
An extremely rare opportunity to taste a listed temomicha winner from the 31st National Temomicha Competition. Temomicha means handrolled tea. The leaves were handpicked on the 19th and 21st April this year and after being steamed, they were hand finished by hand on a table called hoiro filled with washi (Japanese paper). It took around 7 hours in total by hand to finish this tea. Hence, per gram it is actually more expensive than a competition grade gyokuro. The appearance of temomicha, as shown in the photo (from previous year) is needle like.
Limited seats. We feel extremely privilege to be able to serve his tea to our guests. This a form of drinking pure art. As we infuse the tea, you will see the rolled leaves unfolding, opening up more and more, almost like watching the leaves being rolled to needles in a backward video (if that makes any sense?!?)
Okutomi san has been an active member to participate in the temomicha competition at both regional and national level. This year is the best result he has achieved in the national level. The competition awards 1st, 2nd and 3rd ranks and out of over 100 of submission usually only the top 30s are awarded with prizes. His total points has jumped almost 20 since last year’s competition and he was in the second rank (10th in the competition out of 114 submission from 15 prefectures). He is ever so humble and hardworking. We cannot wait for the day when he becomes nippon ichi!
Along with his temomicha, which is made from single cultivar Yabukita, we will also be tasting another single cultivar by him, Sayama Kaori. One freshly prepared wagashi and snack will be served along thiese two teas. As this is a rare opportunity to taste an extremely rare tea, we hope you can come along to this event! As always, 6 guests per timeslots, two timeslot in total.
