A selection of ware by Yamamoto Genta
From the hands of Yamamoto Genta to you 🍵
With a history of 300 years, hoshinoyaki (hoshinoware) once died out when the last kiln was closed in 1894 (Meiji 27). After that, there was a blank period of 80 years.
Aiming to become a potter in his twenties, Yamamoto Genta learned the basics in Ise, trained in Koishiwara, where he encountered Hoshinoyaki and at the age of 26 (1968) opened a kiln in Hoshino Village. He started by looking for clay in the village based on existing Hoshino ware and local information. He searched for pottery clay and raw materials for glaze himself, and after trial and error, later successfully restored yuuhi glaze, a reddish brown colour that shines golden in sunlight when tea or sake is poured into the vessel. His ware is made with local soil, ash from local wood.
Devoted his whole life to pottery, he has been living in the village for over 50 years. In additional to the yuuhi glaze, he also adds his white collection to Hoshinoyaki based on the idea of pear blossoms which he used to see when he was a kid living in Tottori prefecture, where he was born. Additional colour glazing from his discoveries through walks in the nature happen from time to time too.
Behind each ware is a story. Our role is to introduce these stories behind different artists of the ware we use to provide a unique tea experience to our guests.
